The tan cloth cover with crisp brown lettering has some bumps, scuffs and rubs. There is a light spot near the spine.

London: Blackie & Son, 1889. Hardcover. Very Good. Early printing. Illustrated in black and white plates by Gordon Browne. Blue cloth decorated and titled in red, black and gilt on cover and spine. Owner name (Eric Frank Penn) and gift inscription (dated 1889) on half-title and following leaf. Moderately worn with small stains on rear board, gutter and hinges cracked, very good. Wikipedia states Eric Penn "was the eldest son of William Penn, a cricketer and a businessman who ran the family engineering company of John Penn and Sons.
