About This Item

London: Edward Lear (Oakland: Octavo), 1832; 2003. 1st edition. Other Binding. New/No Jacket (as issued). Digital facsimile (in electronic PDF format on CD-ROM disc; not a printed book) of the 1832 first edition of this monument of ornithological illustration, from a copy in the collection of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Edward Lear is well-known for his nonsense verse and drawings, but it is less widely recognized that he started his artistic career as perhaps the most talented renderer of natural history subjects of his day. This Octavo Edition contains detailed digital images of Lear's magnificent hand-colored engravings (may be magnified at up to 200% of original size) as well as a new introduction by natural history scholar Robert McCracken Peck and detailed bibliographical information. Unsold original stock, minor storage wear.

Terms of Sale

Philip Smith, Bookseller

Payment in full by Visa/MC, cash, check, money order, or Amex/Discover (processed by Biblio) with order. Books can be held up to 10 days upon request; email is the preferred (and quickest) means of communication. Postage is extra: orders through Biblio are charged at their prevailing rates; otherwise, postage cost will be quoted upon request (optional insurance is extra at cost). All items are graded conservatively using consistent standards: generally speaking, 'Fine' is the best condition class, followed by 'Very Good', 'Good', 'Fair', and 'Poor' (these can be considered as analogous to letter grades A, B, C, D, F: the latter two classes are rarely offered). Please inquire if you have any questions about the condition of an item listed. Any purchase may be returned for refund if deemed unsatisfactory upon receipt. I will be glad to ship with invoice to academic institutions in advance of payment if a purchase order is provided. Dealers may inquire for reciprocal trade discount. California shipments subject to an additional 9.25% sales tax.
