Prize plate stuck to front pastedown. Hinges are moderately cracked with exposed netting. Clean pages and illustrations with noticeable tanning and foxing throughout. More pronounced to free endpapers and pastedowns. Tightly bound with faint thumb marking throughout. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Minor tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Visible wear marks to boards.

Illustrated with a full color frontispiece and 120 b/w engraved illustrations throughout the text. Blue cloth boards decorated in black and gilt at front and spine, with two small chromolithographs pasted on at front, both chromolithographs badly chipped, with losses. Board soiledcorners rubbed, spine top and tail frayed. Front hinge cracked, but holding, back hinge starting to crack, first signature loose. With a 32 page publishers catalogue bound in at the back.

Condition: NEAR FINE book / NEAR FINE jacket: book is like new (there were two penciled names that have been erased leaving no markings); jacket is like new excepting it is clipped on the lower front flap (but not the price), very light toning to edges. A lovely copy.
