Hamlyn, 1980. 128 well-illustrated pp, one kilo to post. Long before the concept of the aircraft runway was realised, those aircraft which forged original air routes around the globe had no option but to land on water. The very first aircraft to take off from water, however, did so as early as 1910 in France after which the idea spread and it was not long before a variety of hull designs appeared throughout the world. In this work, we find a fascinating history of the Seaplane and the larger variety which became known as Flying Boats. In addition we learn of the progress in design brought about by the Schneider Trophy races in addition to that shown by the military with recoverable spotter planes being used long before the advent of the Aircraft Carrier.. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 30.5cm.
