About This Item

New York: Meriden Britannia Co., 1871. Hardcover. Good -. Magnificent full page wood engraved illustrated folio catalog for the internationally famed producer of silver-plated ware, Meriden Britannia . Each page features stunning illustrations of the silver, from elaborately decorated trays and elegant soup ladles, to tea sets and imposing ice pitchers.

The folio contains price lists for silver plate patterns, including tea sets, trays, vases, wine coolers, serving dishes, flat ware, etc. with prices for "chased" or "plain" printed below the illustrated items and Meriden's trademarks for nickel silver or white metal printed at the top. The catalog is in two parts, the first part listing new prices (pp 7 -71); the second part, titled "Old Price List of 1867" (pp 75 - 194).

This trade catalog was produced just a year after the devastating Meriden fire of June 1870 which destroyed the main building of the Meriden Britannia. The name of the company was derived from "Britannia", a metal alloy similar to pewter, but with a more silvery sheen. The company was founded by the Wilcox brothers in 1852, who established a profitable silver industry in Meriden, eventually earning the town the name "Silver City".

Folio, frontispiece, 'Notice' slip (printed in red pertaining to image sizes on the new and old price lists); errata slip printed on yellow paper loosely inserted; 194pp.

Original dark brown gilt buckram, with title at front cover, no title at spine. Covers rubbed & marked, front cover detached, spine chipped. Internally, damp stains & rippling at early and late pages, the rear end papers, paste down and rear board impacted by damp exposure. OCLC: 5316952 records 6 copies.
