Amsterdam:: Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium, 1648., 1648. Small 8vo. [32], 756 pp. Elaborate engraved title, woodcut initials; lower corner of title torn away, some foxing or browning. Original full vellum, small manuscript spine title. Bookseller's label: Masson & cie.; rubber stamp: Doctor Mario E. Spada. Nice copy. This is the most famous of Jonston's medical writings. ?Jonston's book emphasized the teaching of clinical medicine to students, and therefore represented an interesting choice for Culpeper [his translator, 1652], about half of whose work was undertaken in response to the needs of the English apothecaries, then increasingly numerous and influential.? ?A wide-ranging work, it dealt not only with clinical conditions, but also provided summaries on, for instance, materia medica and on the importance of non-naturals (which he listed as air, meat, drink, motion and rest, sleep and watching) in the preservation of health. Jonston's emphasis on signs and symptoms undoubtedly contributed to a growing empirical outlook in clinical medicine, an influence enhanced by [J.] Michaelis? commentary on Jonston . . . ? - J. K. Crellin, DSB. / First issued in 1642, with five editions, and translated into English in 1652 [?The Idea of Practical Physick?. 1660 Capuchin Devotional by Reims True Perfection of Life Spiritual Exercises
Jean-François de Reims was a 17th-century Capuchin monk whose theological treatises are relatively unknown today. And while his works are not regularly referenced, they do offer value to the development of spiritual devotion in 17th-century Catholic Europe. 1661 Henry IV of France 1ed History of Bourbon Perefixe FAMOUS Elzevier Rare

Also known as Henry the Great, Henry IV was notable for being the first French king from the House of Bourbon. Hardouin de Perefixe's account of the life and reign of the 16th-century monarch is perhaps one of the best biographical sketches of Henry IV. It first appeared in 1661 and was met with significant popularity throughout Europe, so much so, that an English edition was demanded shortly after its initial release.

"All he regarded; but in Syria most,
He mark'd the leaders of the Christian host:
That eye, whose penetrating glances dart
To each deep secret of the human heart"
– Torquato Tasso, Jerusalem Delivered, canto I

Originally written in 1575, Torquato Tasso's famous "Jerusalem Delivered" tells a mythical story of the First Crusade complete with Christian Knights battling Muslim warriors.

1675 DUTCH Medicine Stomach Complaints Food Diet Health SECRETS Bernard Swalve

Bernard Swalve was a 17th-century Dutch physician who is best remembered for his studies on therapeutics and pathology. One of his most obscure works was 'Querelæ Ventriculi Renovatæ', or 'Stomach Complaints' - a treatise on various foods and beverages and their effects on the stomach and body as a whole. Swalve ultimately published a 17th-century diet and health book from the perspective of the medical field. Herman Boerhaave was known to have a high opinion of Swalve and this book.

Description:
1684 Tertullian Apologetics Early Church Father Pagan Gnosticism Heresy Giry

"Truth persuades by teaching, but does not teach by persuading."
― Tertullian

Tertullian was a 2nd-century early Christian church author and apologist. His works helped establish Western theology and early Church doctrine, especially those that spoke out against heresy. He is perhaps most famous for being the first Latin writer to use the term 'trinity' in reference to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Tertullian emphatically defended Christianity against pagans as well as defended 'freedom of religion' as human right unable to be taken away. One of his important apologetics was an anti-Jewish treatise to counteract Gnosticism and other philosophically based doctrines.
These defenses, along with other Tertullian works, are collected in this 1684 French edition. This edition features the translation and notes of Louis Giry.

Description:
1697 Blaise PASCAL Provincial Letters Witchcraft Sorcery JESUIT Philosophy Magic

"I have only made this letter longer because I have not had the time to make it shorter."
― Blaise Pascal, The Provincial Letters

The "Provincial Letters" by Blaise Pascal are a collection of letters in defense of Antoine Arnauld, a Jansenist who was condemned for heresy. Because of the content and nature of the letters, Pascal wrote them under a pseudonym of Louis de Montalte and added satire, humor, and wit to them so as to further himself from the letters. Pascal addresses controversial subject matter including witchcraft, magic, sorcery, and justification of assassinations.

A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets… Read More
