This is the most famous of Jonston's medical writings. ?Jonston's book emphasized the teaching of clinical medicine to students, and therefore represented an interesting choice for Culpeper [his translator, 1652], about half of whose work was undertaken in response to the needs of the English apothecaries, then increasingly numerous and influential.? ?A wide-ranging work, it dealt not only with clinical conditions, but also provided summaries on, for instance, materia medica and on the importance of non-naturals (which he listed as air, meat, drink, motion and rest, sleep and watching) in the preservation of health. Jonston's emphasis on signs and symptoms undoubtedly contributed to a growing empirical outlook in clinical medicine, an influence enhanced by [J.] Michaelis? commentary on Jonston . . . ? - J. K. Tertullian was a 2nd-century early Christian church author and apologist. His works helped establish Western theology and early Church doctrine, especially those that spoke out against heresy. He is perhaps most famous for being the first Latin writer to use the term 'trinity' in reference to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Tertullian emphatically defended Christianity against pagans as well as defended 'freedom of religion' as human right unable to be taken away. One of his important apologetics was an anti-Jewish treatise to counteract Gnosticism and other philosophically based doctrines.
These defenses, along with other Tertullian works, are collected in this 1684 French edition. This edition features the translation and notes of Louis Giry.

A scarce copy of Hooper's second work, an apologetic in defence of the Anglican Church. Hooper had a more than accomplished academic record, being elected a scholar at St Paul's School, and subsequently granted a King's Scholarship at Westminster School. At Oxford he excelled in mathematics, while also learning good Hebrew and Syriac alongside Greek and Latin. In 1680 he was appointed chaplain to King Charles II. Panelled black morocco, with floral blind stamped border. Five raised bands. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers, inside gilt dentelles. Matching gilt blocked decorations of acorns and oak leaves to spine compartments and covers. Facsimile of the 1633 University of Cambridge first edition. xvi, 192, [3], index. Some tanning to pages at margins - seems to be a recurring issue with some Stock editions - joints rubbed, slight crack to front inner hinge. No ownership marks or annotations. No limitation, but a scarce Elliot Stock facsimile edition with no other copies listed online as of May, '23.

A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231.
