Signatures: A8 (-A8), A8, B*8 A-Z8 AA-OO8, Aa-Kk8 Ll4; aa-hh8 (-aa1) ii4, a-q8 r4. Including blank. Lacking title A1 and preliminary leaf A8 of first work, title-leaf aa1 of second work bound at beginnig. "Iacobi Hollerii Stempani, medici Parisiensis celeberrimi De materia chirurgica" (caption title) begins new pagination and register. Includes woodcut device on title-page, head-pieces and initials. Text in Latin with quotations and examples in Greek. Contemporary flexible vellum, yapp edges, spine titled in script (upper hinge cracked, covers soiled and wrinkled). Text browned and spotted (some pages stronger), occasional minor stainings and dust soiling. ---- NLM/Durling 2482; Wellcome 3277; USTC 170037 and 170045. FIRST EDITION, very rare. USTC lists but two libraries (Paris and Yale Univ.) for the second work. Posthumous collection of treatises of the French doctor Houllier (c. 1498/1504-1562) edited by Antoine Valet (+ 1607). The first work "De morbis internis" deal with various diseases (plague, fievers, phtisis, asthma...) and the way to cure them, the "Materia chirurgica" is about drugs to use to avoid surgery and the last "De rhemediis [...] in Galeni libros" is a summary of remedies extracted from Galenus (129-c. 200/216). Houllier became professor of medicine in 1538 and collaborator of Jean Tagault (+ 1560) who asked him in 1543 to complete his "Institutiones chirurgicae". He was also dean of the Medicine Faculty in 1546 and 1547 and was the teacher a.o. of Louis Duret.

1635. Geneva: Petri Chouet, 1635. Large 8vo. Contemporary speckled calf sometime rebacked in marching calf, spine with brown morocco gilt lettering piece; pp [xxii] + 315 + [19, index]; a little spotting, very good. Provenance: title page with signature of W. Standfast and verso with inscription 'This book belongs to the library in the Charity School Chamber in Nottingham given by Dr. William Standfast'. William Standfast (1683-1754) was Rector of Clifton near Nottingham and the library he founded was notable for its holding of scientific and medical books. Later edition. Houllier (1504? - 1562) was a French physician who maintained the traditions of Galen and Hippocrates at a time when rivals such as Vesalius were challenging them. He was greatly respected as a translator and interpreter of Hippocrates.
