About This Item
New York, New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., Inc., 1936. First Edition Later Printing . Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Local newsman presents tales from those who live & work along the San Diego waterfront in the late 1930s, including tugboat operators, the Sardine Fleet, boats hunting seals for the famous San Diego Zoo, tuna fishermen, the California fruit liners, & the growing fleet of Navy & other military operations. Basis for the award-winning 1933 film of the same name starring Ben Lyon & Claudette Colbert. A FIRST EDITION, 11th printing (Sept. 1936), this hardcover in publisher's bright orange cloth with embossed blue lettering to front & spine is in truly Fine condition (our highest grade): only flaw is heavy tanning on pages 75-82 where old newspaper clipping was laid in. However, this vintage article offers a fascinating story itself about a true "old school waterfronter" forced to relocate his houseboat due to defense industry housing demands. Otherwise, book is completely clean, binding strong & straight. The unclipped DJ (with orig. $2 price at bottom) is Near Fine, marred by a tiny chipped area at top edge of back cover & long tear (taped internally) between back cover & spine, descending from top edge. Nicely protected in clear mylar cover free! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same day shipping on all orders received Weekdays by 2 pm (PST); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day.
