New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, 1934. First US Edition/First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Poor . The magnificent first novel in the Claudius duology. In blue cloth with blind stamp to front cover and gilt to type on spine which has largely worn off to title and author. Light foxing to front and bottom page ends, otherwise clean with sharp corners and solid binding. Jacket is unclipped ($3.00) and brittle with a fair amount of foxing to flaps, long split down rear half of spine from top and across which has small tape repair. Chipping and short tears to corners, spine ends and tops of panels. Puncture to front panel, very faded spine and scuffing overall.
Synopsis
I, Claudius is a novel by English writer Robert Graves, first published in 1934, that deals sympathetically with the life of the Roman Emperor Claudius and cynically with the history of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty and Roman Empire, from Julius Caesar's assassination in 44 BC to Caligula's assassination in AD 41. Graves's interpretation of the story owes much to the histories of Tacitus, Plutarch, and (especially) Suetonius. Graves translated Suetonius before writing the novel.
