About This Item

New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, 1934. Hardcover. Good. Later printing. Fold-out family tree in rear. Blind embossed blue cloth with gilt-stamped spine title. Scattered foxing on pages, gutter cracked before title, cloth soiled and rubbed, a good only copy. Graves' best-known work, a pseudo-autobiography of the smart but crippled Roman emperor lucky enough to be sandwiched between his deranged relatives Caligula and Nero. Basis for an aborted 1937 film epic starring Charles Laughton and Merle Oberon and directed by Josef von Sternberg, of which only a few scenes survived.

Synopsis

I, Claudius is a novel by English writer Robert Graves, first published in 1934, that deals sympathetically with the life of the Roman Emperor Claudius and cynically with the history of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty and Roman Empire, from Julius Caesar's assassination in 44 BC to Caligula's assassination in AD 41. Graves's interpretation of the story owes much to the histories of Tacitus, Plutarch, and (especially) Suetonius. Graves translated Suetonius before writing the novel.
