About This Item

Paris, 1803. Very Good. Notes: Engraved Latin title page.
Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720 – 1778) was a prominent Italian Classical archaeologist, architect, and artist, famous for his etchings of Rome. Although he was the son of a stonemason and studied structural and hydraulic engineering, Piranesi is best remembered for his monumental etchings, which demonstrate this lifelong interest in architecture and design. As passionate about architecture was he also about Rome and Roman culture; in Lapides Captolini, Piranesi lists all the Consuls, triumph, and major games of Rome up to the reign of Tiberius (Wilton-Ely, 606). Of import is the extra-large fold-out plate Senatus Populusque…, on which Piranesi inscribed this history. “Piranesi reproduces these pieces as they were set into Michelangelo’s frame in the Palazzo dei Conservatori…skilfully filling the gaps with sculpture and objects derived from the Capitoline collections” (Wilton-Ely, 606).

John Wilton-Ely, Piranesi: The Complete Etchings, vol. 1, pp. 606-612.
