About This Item

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1890. Reprint. Hardcover. Very Good. 16mo. Pp. xxiv, 284; 329. Three-quarter bound in dark red cloth and gold and dark green floral-pattern printed cloth, titles and decorations stamped in gilt on the spines, gilt tops. Bookplate of Mary Corning Winslow, Wood Cliff, on the Hudson. The paste from the bookplate has bled through, and caused offsetting on opposing page. Spine ends a tad crimped, edges rubbed, very light foxing and offsetting to endpapers, leaves crisp and bright. Kingsley (1819 - 1875) was a parish priest, Chaplain to the Queen, tutor to the Prince of Wales, professor of History at Cambridge, novelist, Christian Socialist, pamphleteer, etc. Today he's perhaps best known for Westward Ho! and the perennial seller Water Babies. But this Victorian Christian apologia, a fictionalized life of the pagan philosopher, was long regarded as his best work.

Former owner Mary Corning Winslow Black (b. 1873) was a daughter of businessman and industrialist John Flack Winslow, owner of the ironclad USS Monitor and president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. Her husband, Clarence, was president of Cadillac Motor Company.
