About This Item

London: Macmillan. Hardback. xiv, 345pp. Very attractively bound copy of this Victorian tale, a fictionalised account of the life of the fifth century philosopher Hypatia told from the perspective of the adventures of a monk Philammon in the political and religious disputes of the day. Extremely popular and well regarded in the nineteenth century though its anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic sentiments very much date the tale now. Introductory essay by the author. Half bound in leather with marbled papers to boards. Raised bands to spine with gilt titles to a red label and gilt decorative borders and banding to the spine compartments. Slight fading to spine. Surface loss to the leather on the front. A little scuffed to the leather corners. Marbled papers to boards are bright and match the marbled endpapers and the Marbled closed page edges. It also has the most beautiful hand drawn and lettered previous owner's name to the first prelim, with decorated capitals and flourishing borders, dated 1893, and done in pen and ink. Very clean and sound. Very good copy . Hardback. 1893.
