About This Item
Washington DC: Government Printing Office, 1920. Paperback. Good. 146 p., [10] unpaginated pages of illustrations (1 blank): in-text map, drawing, tables, charts; 23 cm. Red-brown wrapper printed in black. Contents: The Experimental Production of Pellagra in Human Subjects by Means of Diet by Joseph Goldberger and G.A. Wheeler -- The Chemical Composition of the Rankin Farm Pellagra Producing Experimental Diet by M.X. Sullivan and K.K. Jones -- Biological Study of a Diet Resembling the Rankin Farm Diet by M.X. Sullivan -- Feeding Experiments with the Rankin Farm Pellagra Producing Experimental Diet by M.X. Sullivan. Garrison-Morton 3757. Joseph Goldberger and G.A. Wheeler conducted an experiment in producing pellagra through diet at the Rankin Farm of the Mississippi State Penitentiary on a group of white male volunteers. This was part of a larger study by Goldberger into the cause of pellagra, then a major health problem in the southern United States. His evidence that people who ate a heavily corn-based diet were more likely to develop pellagra met with social and political resistance. Further research by others eventually led to the specific cause -- a lack of niacin and reduced levels of trytophan. In Good Condition: spine slightly sunned; minor loss of wrapper at ends and middle of spine; "6243" written in ink on spine and in two places at head of front wrapper; a few pencil marks on front wrapper; fore-edge of back wrapper scraped, with one large chip; p. 32 scraped, with minor loss of text; minor damage to facing page of illustration along gutter; otherwise clean and tight.
