Wheeler conducted an experiment in producing pellagra through diet at the Rankin Farm of the Mississippi State Penitentiary on a group of white male volunteers. This was part of a larger study by Goldberger into the cause of pellagra, then a major health problem in the southern United States. His evidence that people who ate a heavily corn-based diet were more likely to develop pellagra met with social and political resistance. Further research by others eventually led to the specific cause -- a lack of niacin and reduced levels of trytophan.
