About This Item

London: Michael Joseph Ltd, 1959. First edition. Very Good +/very good +. This book tells one of the most dramatic sea stories of all time: the death of Hitler's proudest, deadliest battleship, at the moment when it might have turned the course of history. On May 18, 1941, teh Bismarck was in Gdynia Harbour, making ready to proceed to sea after a prolonged period of training in the Baltic. At 42,000 tons, she was the world's largest, most dangerous, most modern ship of war yet launched. The men on board the Bismarck were confident. There was no ship in the British navy that could face them in single combat; there was no large ship that could escape them. The author has recounted the events as they actually happened and in preparation he spent weeks with the records of the Admiralty, interviewed scores of persons who had had a hand in dispatching the Bismarck and has painstakingly reconstructed, minute by minute, the final fatal days of that proud battleship. The result is naval reporting of the highest order - clear, dramatic, fast-paced and full of suspense. C.S. Forester wrote the script for the film of the sinking of the Bismarck. Mylar cover;blue boards with writing to spine.some bumping amd rubbing. dj not price clipped.pagesare clean but the edges are foxed.owner inscription in ink.dj has some nicks. First Edition AB70
