Large quarto (12 1/4" x ,9"), beige cloth with brown lettering on spine and front cover with glossy colored plate depicting "La Salle Christening the Country 'Louisiana,'"profusely illustrated by Howard Pyle with more than 200 images (many being full-page plates in color or black & white) plus in-text B&W vignettes, xiii, [xiv-xviii] + 344 + [345-348] pages. Howard Pyle (1853 - 1911) was a major American illustrator and author, primarily of books for young people. <br/> <br/> After his death, the publisher collected a number of his pirate stories and illustrations and published them as Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates (1921); then, this collection: Howard Pyle's Book of the American Spirit, compiled by the distinguished historian, Merle Johnson.<br/> <br/> Overall in Very Good Condition: tight, internally unmarked pages, moderate wear to cloth and front cover plate, very light uniform toning and the occasional small smudge to paper.
