How We Escaped from Pretoria: Family association with a fellow prisoner of Churchill's
by Captain Aylmer Haldane
- Used

This book should have definite interest for Winston Churchill enthusiasts.
Sir James Aylmer Lowthorpe Haldane (1862 – 1950) was a Scottish British Army General. He fought in the 2nd Boer War in South Africa, where he was taken a war prisoner.
While imprisoned in Pretoria, he planned the escape which made Winston Churchill famous. Haldane failed to escape at the same time and later complained of Churchill's lack of regard for those who should have escaped with him. However, Haldane later managed his own escape. This book recounts his story of his capture, internment and escape.
This particular copy of the book has familial association with a fellow British officer captured along with Haldane and Churchill, a Lieut. F.N. Le Mesurier, who also escaped with Haldane. Lieut. Le Mesurier, later Major, died in WW I. This book is signed by his older brother, Rev. Sydney Le Mesurier, and also inscribed as a gift to his own daughter, Una.
As a Le Mesurier family heirloom, it includes 1) a postcard with a picture of the school in Pretoria where the captives were held prisoner, 2) newspaper photos of Le Mesurier and Haldane at the time of their escape, and 3) two other newspaper clippings of Churchill's story of his escape, one dated Feb. 10, 1935 and the other undated.
Original mustard cloth pictorial cover, 231 pp. The book has the label of the W.H. Smith & Son's Subscription Library. The hinges are cracked, but is otherwise in good to very good condition, with signs of normal wear. It includes all photo plates, as well as the fold-out map in the back, which is torn but still complete (see photo)

Description:
London: Jane Wynne, 1843. First. Very Good. This is an extremely interesting book, written and published privately by a woman in early Victorian days to appeal her imprisonment in debtors' prison She was apparently married to a wealthy man who gave her cause to seek an annulment (after having a daughter with him) but who died before the legal annulment was completed Thus began a lengthy and convoluted chain of events and relationships that culminated in her losing her money and, in her view, being deceived by several men along the way, including the Marquis of Clanricarde She ended up writing the book to attempt to vindicate herself, but I can find nothing about her on the Internet except references to this book, and even the Marquis' Wikipedia entry doesn't mention any scandal at all From everything I can find, this appears to be the only copy currently available on the market The book itself is in quite good condition, in the original dark cloth, slightly rubbed with a small chip from the spine…

Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows
) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions…
