Charles Scribner's Son's. Collectible - Good. Octavo. Library Binding Hardcover, 1890. First Edition. Ex-library with the usual treatments. xvi + 304pp. With numerous illustrations and photos, all present, as well as frontispiece with full tissue-guard. Rebound in sturdy blue buckram with gilt lettering on the side. Cover shows mild wear and sunning along spine and edges. Joints and hinges are strong, and the textblock is sturdy and tight. Pages are clean and entirely intact. "1890" on both title and copyright page. A classic photojournalistic expose of the slums of New York at the end of the 19th century. Riis, coming from a background of poverty himself, hoped to spur the upper class into action with his work, and in doing so helped to start the trend of muckraking journalism. Offered by the Antiquarian, Rare, and Collectible department of Better World Books. Your purchase benefits global literacy programs. 100% satisfaction guaranteed.

Description:
2 parts: 340 pages with fold out table; 143+[3 errata] pages. Octavo (8 ¾ " x 6 ½ ") bound in cloth with gilt lettering to spine. From the library of George M Foster. First edition.Tzeltal is a member of the Mayan family of languages and is spoken mainly in the State of Chiapas, Mexico. Some of the earliest written documents in Tzeltal are Fray Domingo de Ara's Vocabulario de Lengua Tzeldal Según el Orden de Copanabastla, which is believed to have been written in 1571, and Manuel Díez's 1675 work, Conciones en Lingua Tzeldaica. There are currently at least six different dialects of Tzeltal spoken in Chiapas: Northern (Ocosingo, Bachajon) , West Central (Tenejapa, Cancuc), East Central (Oxchuc, Chanal, Amatenango), Southern (Aguacatenango, Villa las Rosas, Teopisca), South Western (Copanaguastla [extinct], Comitan), and the nearly extinct South Eastern (Trinitaria, Lagos de Montebello). However, this classification scheme is partial at best - each town where Tzeltal is spoken in the highlands of… Read More

Description:
1747 ROME Nieupoort Senate Roman Law Customs Mythology Cicero Latin Utrecht
Willem Nieupoort, a 17th-century Dutch historian, wrote 'Rituum' as a supplement to traditional Roman antiquarian studies. He outlined various aspects of Roman orders including the establishment of Rome and the Roman Senate, the offices of religious priests, liturgical rites, and the importance of games and amphitheater entertainments. There is also an important section focused on the Roman army as well as a section on the private lives of Romans, exploring their clothing, customs, coins, and celebrations.
Nieupoort was a well-known and respected jurist of his time, thus much of his perspective in this work involves Roman law. He acknowledges the importance of Cicero, Plato, and other philosophers, but also mentions the Roman focus on mythology.

Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") volume one rebound in red leather with gilt lettering to spine; volume two original quarter leather with gilt lettering to spine over marbled boards. First editions. The first Mexican linguist worthy of this name is Francisco Pimentel, in the second half of the nineteenth century. He attempted to systematize what was known until then about the Indian languages of Mexico. His work is the starting-point for the development of a more scientific approach to linguistic studies on Mesoamerican languages. A scholar versed in European typology and comparative linguistic studies of the nineteenth century Pimentel is clearly indebted to his predecessor the Spaniard Lorenzo Hervas y Panduro, as well as Wilhelm von Humboldt, Friedrich Schlegel, Ernest Renan, Jacob Grimm and others. His work on linguistic classification in Mexico, unlike that of Orozco y Berra, was as up to date as that of any of his North American contemporaries. The second… Read More

The journal was the first of its kind, championing an interdisciplinary approach alongside a commitment to international dialogue, while fostering a community of international scholars. It became known for its innovative format that combined major research papers with responses solicited from the field. The format, now known as the "CA treatment" was unique in its time and was copied by other journals such as Behavioral and Brain Sciences.
