Ward Lock & Co, 1948. 255pp, less than 500g to post. Faults? owner name stamp, dj edges chipped & taped externally (see pic) This was one of Mary Grant Bruce’s favourite books, and is one of her best. Although The Houses of the Eagle is set in a Victorian seaside town, it features a Tasmanian family and was written while Mary stayed at Port Elliot in South Australia. The youngest boy, John, is a portrait of Mary’s son Pat. He is shown as a sensitive and brilliant child, who loves poetry and mischief in about equal proportions. This is the story of a bank accountant and his family who are moved from a dry and dusty Mallee town to a new town near the sea. Their search for a home proves to be difficult until they are offered a house with an absentee landlady. When the landlady returns, life becomes interesting.. 1st Australian Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good/Fair. 19.5 Cm.

Pp. 248(last blank)+[8](advertisements), frontispiece plus 3 plates by Harold Copping; cr. 8vo; pictorial dull olive green cloth, lettered in red & black and illustrated in light brown & black, a trifle soiled and rubbed; price-clipped dust wrapper, lightly soiled and foxed, edges rubbed and split, with piece torn from top edge of front panel near backstrip, and a few small tape repairs on reverse; scattered foxing; Ward, Lock & Co., Limited, London, n.d.[c. 1940?]. Reprinted? *Collates as for Muir 1115 [the first edition] and retains the first edition date (1925) on the title page, but the author's other books listed on the back panel of the dust wrapper end with Peter & Co., which was published in 1940. The dust wrapper illustration, which features a kangaroo on the front panel and a koala on the backstrip, is not by Harold Copping, and does not match the dust wrapper of the first edition (which was a repeat of the illustration on the upper board).
