Athens, GA University of Georgia Press, 1988. Paperback First Ed thus; First Printing indicated. First Ed thus; First Printing indicated. Very Good in Wraps: shows indications of light use: barely discernible spine lean; light wear to extremities; mild rubbing to wrapper covers; careful tape-repair at head of back-strip; former bookseller's rubber-stamped seal at front endpaper; binding secure; text clean. No longer 'As New', but remains clean, sturdy, and quite presentable. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 294pp. Foreward by William L. Andrews. University Press Paperback. Chestnut's depiction of a struggling family with mixed blood in the reconstructionist south is brilliant. He presents the story of a young man with African blood who, because of his lighter skin and more anglo-features, is able to pass into a bigoted society and become a successful lawyer. His attempt to bring his beautiful sister (who shares his anonymous features) into white society ends in tragedy, and portrays a poignant message about deceit, bigotry, and the belief that love conquers all and transcends all boundaries. A great interesting read for all audiences, and a must read for transgendered persons who want to know that others have suffered the same fate as they are struggling--to assimilate into a biased society. I highly recommend this book, and predict that it will rise to become a classic literary masterpiece in the not so distant future.
