London: George Newnes, 1902. The First Edition has for sale the very rare and desirable fictional detective first edition book of probably the most famous Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes adventures of them all, Arthur Conan Doyle The Hound of the Baskervilles. Arthur Conan Doyle The Hound of the Baskervilles was published by George Newnes Ltd [London] in 1902 and this book has the misprint to page 13 (line 3) in which was published the word "you" instead of the word "your". The original boards decorated in gilt and black are in Very Good condition being complete and attractive, but with fading to the bottom portion of the front board which affects part of the gilt decoration and the name Conan Doyle, which is still very visible; slight knocks to the top and bottom of the spine; light wear and very slight bubbling to the cloth of the back board; and very slight shelf lean which is barely noticeable. This is a very attractive set of boards for The Hound of the Baskervilles which is 110 years old. There are 358 numbered pages containing 15 Chapters as follows: Mr Sherlock Holmes, The Curse of the Baskervilles, The Problem, Sir Henry Baskerville, Three Broken Threads, Baskerville Hall, The Stapletons of Merripit House, First Report of Dr Watson, Second Report of Dr Watson, Extract From the Diary of Dr Watson, The Man on the Tor, Death on the Moor, Fixing the Nets, The Hound of the Baskervilles, A Retrospection. The Hound of the Baskervilles comes complete with the 16 plates by Sidney Paget which is as follows: The Shadow of Sherlock Holmes (frontispiece), There in the Centre Lay the Unhappy Maid Where She Had Fallen, Sir Henry Baskerville, "There's Our Man, Watson! Come Along", He Held an Old, Dusty Boot in One of His Hands, Welcome, Sir Henry!, He Took Us to Show Us the Spot, The Yew Alley, Over the Rocks was Thrust Out an Evil Yellow Face, I Saw the Figure of a Man Upon the Tor, Franklin Clapped His Eye to it, and Gave a Cry of Satisfaction, There He Sat Upon a Stone, The Hound of the Baskervilles, He Looked Round Him in Surprise, Holmes Emptied Five Barrels of His Revolver into the Creature's Side, Mrs Stapleton Sank Upon the Floor. The pages are in Very Good to Near Fine condition being exceptionally clean and firmly bound in. There is a small red mark to the blank front free endpaper, but other than this internally this is an exceptional example of this rare and collectable Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes book. The Hound of the Baskervilles is one of the most sought after and collectable of the Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes detective stories featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. This Sherlock Holmes novel that was famously made into a film in 1939 starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes, Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson and Richard Greene as Sir Henry Baskerville. This book will be treasured for years to come and will make a wonderful addition to any Arthur Conan Doyle, crime detective fiction or Sherlock Holmes book collection.
