Lugd. Bat: Elzevir, 1629. Hardcover. Fine. 16mo. Three volumes in one, and with the two blank leaves at the end of part 3. Eighteenth century full straight grain crimson morocco. Spine titled in gilt with dotted gilt rules; similar dotted gilt rules on the borders of the boards. All edges gilt . Marbled endpapers. Inner gilt straight line dentelles. A fine copy. Protected in a cloth covered slipcase. Provenance: Bookplate of Syston Park Library, collected at Lincolnshire by Sir John Hayford Thorold, Bart., and his predecessors, on the front pastedown; Label of Charles Butler of Warren Wood, Hatfield, on the front free endpaper; pictorial plate of Charles Walker Andrews, a New York attorney, on the reverse. Binding attributed to Roger Payne, Syston Park's favorite binder. The Sotheby's catalogue of the Syston Park sale suggests that the present copy was Sir John's duplicate, this example having marbled endpapers rather than the "silk linings" described in another copy.
