Oval library stamps on end pages, front and rear. Card envelope on front pastedown. University library name stamped in faded ink on bottom page edges. A few pages chipped at top corner; one with corner removed completely, but remarkably, the free piece is laid in, so text can be completed. Pages toned yellow at edges. Text unmarked. Binding sound. Two fold-out maps intact, one with a crease along the edge, the other has a 3-in. closed tear. Smells of smoke. 8vo. BOOK INFO: This essay was awarded the Robert M. Johnston Military History Prize by the American Historical Association for 1920. Illustrated with B&W maps. A Confederate general during the American Civil War, John Bell Hood had a reputation for bravery and aggressiveness that sometimes bordered on recklessness. Arguably one of the best brigade and division commanders in the Confederate States Army, Hood gradually became increasingly effective as he was promoted to lead larger, independent commands late in the war, but his career and reputation were marred by his decisive defeats leading an army in the Atlanta Campaign and the Franklin-Nashville Campaign. 'Success worth the having did not rest with the Northern cause until unity of command in reality as well as in the theory was an accomplished fact. With the Confederacy it was otherwise. Each army pursued its way, independent of the others, and won or lost because of its superiority in leadership and action on the field of battle, and without relation to events in other fields.'
