About This Item

Parisiis: Apud Ioannem Foucherium, via Iacobaea sub Scuto Florentiae, 1560. Vellum. Very Good. 4 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches. 323 numbered leaves. Leaves numbered on recto only. A few pages with neat ink marginalia, including drawings and decorations in a near contemporary hand. Paper backing spine and endpapers are near contemporary Spanish leaves relating to St. Francis of Assisi. Front pastedown with bookseller's label "W.W. Blake/Old Book Specialist/16 De Septiembre 13/Mexico City, Mex." Title page with old ownership inscriptions, including Antonio Mendez. Last four leaves with closed tears to lower margins affecting several lines of text. Bound in contemporary full limp vellum with remains of two ties now lacking. Cover with nice patina, and what appears to be "homilem hoffm" in contemporary hand to the spine. Cover has been detached at front hinge to reveal spine. Oval seal branded on lower page edge (apparently of St. James, with partially legible motto "to de Santiago"). Canceled brand on top edge. Significant wear and loss at tail of spine though not affecting text. Hoffmeister (d.1547) was a German Augustinian, and prior of the house at Colmar in Alsace. This book of homilies is notable for its opposition to the Reformation. Hoffmeister's works were widely read among the Catholic clergy and influential in pre-Tridentine Germany. He is remembered on the Roman Kalendar on August 2.
