Longfellow, and James Russell Lowell collected by previous owner and affixed to entry page of that author's chapter. 374 pages. Full leather binding;dark brown calf with triple gilt rule and design on covers, turn-ins ; banded spine with title and gilt decorated compartments. All edges gilt; Marbled endpapers. First published in 1852. The homes of 17 authors are described and illustrated with views of their residences from original drawings (and two dagguerrotypes) and a facsimile of a manuscript from each author. Illustrations include 20 steel engravings (inc. frontispiece) and 15 wood engraved vignettes (13 of which are color tinted) . Frontis illustration of Everett's Library. 16 facsimiles of manuscripts. Featured authors include: Audubon, Paulding, Irving, Bryant, Bancroft, Dana, Prescott, Sedgwick, Cooper, Everett, Emerson, Simms, Longfellow, Hawthorne, Webster, Kennedy, Lowell, Halleck. The earlier 1853 Putnam edition is referenced in BAL 1345, 20665, but not this 1855 edition (difference in paper used for engravings, and number of color ill.).Packaged with care and shipped in a box. .
