About This Item

(Oldcastle, County Meath, Ireland): Gallery Books, 2005. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Octavo. 79pp. Crown gently bumped and topedge with the faintest staining, otherwise fine in a lightly worn, near fine dust jacket with corresponding bumping at the crown and some almost imperceptible rippling near the topedge. Inscribed on the title page: "Greencastle / Co. Donegal / Feb '05 /// To Roger & Carol- with a lot of love. Brian."

Laid in is a one-page typed letter from Friel that accompanied the book, dated in the month of publication (one quarto sheet of author's letterhead, old folds and two gentle creases else fine). The warm, personal letter begins: "Your warm and very welcome letter got here the other day and I was really delighted to hear from you. To get the stroke thing out of the way I am recovering but it is slow and Anne is typing this letter for me. I think your 'memoir' pieces in the past have been special. And I urged you before, I think, to have a shot at a long sustained piece." He mentions that he is sending this book along and closes: "Its a joy to get The New Yorker every week. You were all very courageous during the election campaign and the early stage of the Iraq war. Ann joins me in sending our love to you both. Warmest, [Signed in type] Brian.
