About This Item
London, John Field, 1658. Small Hardback, approx 4.5 x 2.5 inches. In full red morocco leather fine binding, gilt paneled decoration to boards, raised banding and gilt decorations and lettering to spine. Light brown endpapers. Full gilt page edges. In very good condition. Some rubbing to corners and ends of spine, some minor rubbing to edges. A couple of minor handling marks else pages all very clean and tight. One small tear to corner of “Job Ch. XI-XII.” Main title page imprint is very strong and clear. Contains The Book of Psalms, Ends at Malachi (Book of Prophets.) An excellent clean and tight copy. With a decorative engraved title page. One of two 1658 pocket-sized editions of the King James Bible printed using a pearl-sized font, known as the "Pearl Bible." (It is conjectured that one of the editions was printed by Field, and the other, "spurious," edition was foreign and/or pirated, though it is difficult to establish which is "spurious" and which is "genuine," per A.S. Herbert) Although Title states “New Testament”, this only contains Old Testament.
