A deeply carved cover and much gilt decoration makes both boards beautiful, as does the gilt designs on the spine. Outer page edges are gilded on the all three sides.The Bible includes "the apochrypha, a concordance and psalms to which is appended a comprehensive Bible dictionary, plus over one hundred thousand marginal references, a concise history of all religious denominations, and many engravings on steel and wood. Beautiful color plate at frontis. The Bible also has a section in the middle for recording genealogical material. This has been filled out and is connected to the two inscriptions at front. The first reads "C.E. Barnes Book by Her Father, Rev. Iannes McCombs December 25th, 1876." Tucked into this page is a pressed rose still instact. The second inscription comes much later and reads thus: "This Bible belongs to Mary Lore Schimpler given to her by her mother belonging to her great-grandmother, Catherine Barnes. Dec. 10, 1939.
