About This Item
1800. (BIBLES). The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated Out of the Original Tongues; and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. New-York: Printed and Sold by Hugh Gaine, 1800. [Second title]: The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Newly Translated Out of the Original Greek; and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. New-York: Printed and Sold by Hugh Gaine, 1800. 12mo. [696;192]pp. double-columned (per Evans). Contemporary paneled calf, raised spine bands, gilt-ornamented compartments. Lacks front and rear endpapers and much of rear pastedown, else very good. Very rare, Worldcat locates only four copies. Evans 36954. Hills, English Bible in America 73. The only auction record we can find is the Brinley Sale of 1881. Gaine's Bible of 1792 is much more common than this edition. So obscure is this edition, that Paul Leicester Ford did not mention it in his bibliography of Gaine's press. Hugh Gaine ceased printing in 1800, although the bookshop continued to operate into 1804. According to newspaper notices in November of that year, the firm had recently dissolved and the shop's stock was sold. Also during this time, Gaine promoted the formation of professional book trade associations and book fairs. On the verso of the second title page is genealogical information for the family of Jonathan Sexton of Middletown and Ellington, Connecticut.
