About This Item
New York: Pantheon Books, 1986. First Printing, First U.S. Edition. . Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. In 1933, when Hitler and the Nazi Party came to power in Germany, Engelmann was a 12-year-old schoolboy, whose family waited too long to leave the country. A dozen years later, at the end of the Third Reich, he was an ex-Luftwaffe enlisted man, imprisoned in Dachau for aiding Jews to escape Germany. This book is the story of his experiences woven through with his later interviews of average German citizens on how they accomodated Nazism in their daily lives. It is a cautionary tale, as relevant today as in 1933, on how easily immorality and evil can be accepted when doled out in a-little-bit-a-day doses. Foreword by Studs Terkel. First U.S. Edition, First Printing. About 6 3/8 x 9 1/2 inches, 335 pages, plus a brief biographical note; quarter bound in black cloth over grey paper-covered boards with author's initials in red on front board and red lettering on spine. The dustjacket's front panel shows a black & white photo of group of children waving small wands topped with the Nazi swastika. Title and author's name are in red. Back panel contains quote by Willy Brandt centered and boxed in red borders. Inside back flap shows photo of author. Text shows only a touch of soiling on top edge, o/w text and boards are complete, clean and unmarked. No significant flaws, not remaindered. Red lettering on dustjacket's spine beginning to fade, o/w quite minor edgewear at spine ends, including single tiny tear at lower end. No creasing, chipping or bumping, not price-clipped. A collectable copy of this piece of "common people" history.
