With folding map and 11 full page plates. The binding has gilt-lined raised bands, decorative gilt compartments and title label to spine, with titles and gilt border to front board. It is clean, but with wear to corners (with leather loss), and the top and bottom of the spine. There is splitting at the front spine joint. The endpapers are marbled, with the armorial bookplate of F Monteith Ogilvie to the front pastedown, and the decorative bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson, a noted Orcadian book collection to the fep. Dark green pictorial cloth with gilt titles and blind embossed African continent, brown endpapers. Stanley's detailed account of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition (1886-1889), in which he led 400 armed men through the Congo and Ituri rain forest in an unsuccessful bid to rescue the Equatoria governor. The expedition suffered heavy losses through death and desertion. Nevertheless, Stanley made several interesting discoveries and negotiated treaties with tribal chiefs that served Britain's colonial interests. 1676 pp (14) + 1-136 ( first part) ; (8) + 137-348 + (20) (second part) ; ( 10) + 159 + (15) ( third part) The first part, a history of the Civil War, first published in 1649, was written by George Bate ( physician to Charles 1, Oliver Cromwell and also Charles 2), he also wrote the second part which covers the years 1649-59. Following the death of Bates in 1668 the third part, covering the years 1659-69, was written by Thomas Skynner ,also a physician . This copy is internally in very good condition; the binding is tight and looks at some stage to have been strengthened. The cover, early perhaps contemporary, is moderately marked and scuffed with an owner's reference number on the spine; front hinge cracked but holding.

The pamphlet is 4 pages in length and contains two excerpts from Churchill's House of Commons Speech of 24 February 1903 - the last of his famous six oratorical assaults on Brodrick's plan to expand the Army. In 1903 Winston Churchill was a brash new member of Parliament. Then Secretary of State for War, John Brodrick, had introduced a plan for expanding the peacetime Army. Brodrick was a fellow Conservative and Cabinet member. Churchill had been an Army officer and had partaken in four wars on three continents before election to Parliament in 1900.
