About This Item

Hilversum: The Paper Publications Society, 1962 4to (31.5 cm), frontispiece, XXX, 304 pp, X plates, 2 folding maps. Publisher's cloth (minor shelf-wear). Edited and adapted for English publication by J. S. G. Simmons. The work is divided into two parts, with the first and larger part focusing on the history of paper-making, particularly paper mills in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Baltic areas. Part II delves into watermarks. Five appendices discuss moulds, chain-line and laid-line dimensions, the time-lag between paper manufacture and use, the technique of attributing Russian papers to their places of manufacture, and ream-wrapper labels. The appendices are followed by a list of the 815 watermarks reproduced. Lists of dates within the watermarks, a typological index, and an index of the letters and words in the marks conclude the text of the volume.
