Four volumes. Printed for Scott and Webster, (successors to Mr. Dove). London [ca. 1835]. Octavo. Engraved title, title, half title, xlvii, 592; title, half title, xxxv, 652pp; title, half title, xlviii, 543pp, Directions for placing the Plates; title, half title, 622pp. 22 Engraved plates. Full contemporary calf, blind lattice, foliar and multi bordered tray tooling to boards, foliar gilt tooling to edges, gilt to spine, leather labels. Marbled endpapers and edges. Text bright and crisp. A little foxing/toning to some plates. Wear and rubbing to extremities, a few nicks and scratches to the boards. A handsome, firmly bound set. Rare: One copy only recorded of this edition in JISC: held by the National Trust. Not in the British Library. Not listed in WorldCat.

ARMORIAL ENGRAVED BOOKPLATES TO EACH VOLUME

Gwynne Hughes, Glancothi

Colonel William Gwynn Hughesof Glancothi, Llanegwad, Carmarthenshire. F.R.G.S. (1841- 1920). Colonel William Gwynn Hughes spent most of his Army career in Burma, retiring after the annexation of Upper Burma in 1885. As Major, he was Deputy Commisioner of British Burma, and is the author of 'The Hill Tracts of Arakan' printed at the Government Press, Rangoon. 1881. Son of William Garnons-Hughes (1800-1878) of 'Glancothy'. In 1882 he married Nina Adelaide Henfrey of Villa Botti, Sarzana, Italy, the officiating clergyman being his brother, The Reverend Edward Hughes of Ludchurch, Pembrokeshire. His brother John married Adah Constance Abadam who inherited Middleton Hall, Llanarthne in 1902, which was in 1914 inherited by their son William John Hamlin Hughes (1879-1941). Nina Henfrey's sister, Beatrice Henfrey married his cousin, Major John William Gwynne-Hughes of Tregib.

Both a Welsh and English speaker William Gwynne Hughes was highly regarded by his tenants and villagers of Llanegwad, Felingwm, Cothi Bridge and Nant Garedig as a philanthropist. The Glancothi Estate, comprising: Penrhiw-Meredith, Tycrug Farm, Cwmcothi, Ynysyrhyd, Tyrheol, Hafod, Tyllwyd and Maesgwyn (Cefn Maesgwyn) in the parish of Llanegwad in the county of Carmarthenshire

Cloth, G+. xx+391pp, occasionbal light foxing, cloth rubbed at the edges & spine sunned, paper spine label a little worn fore edges untrimmed, a good reading copy. An abridged edition of Burnet's celebrated history of the Reformation, written in answer to Nicholas Sanders' 'De Origine et Progressu Schismatio Anglicani Libri Tres' which had attacked the English reformation as nothing more than a political move by a corrupt King. The book earned Burnet much praise.
