Topics include: criminal codes and penal systems of colonial N.J.; origin and failure of the first state prison of N.J., 1797-1836; second state prison system of N.J., 1836-1860; N.J. and the Auburn system, 1860-1885; the state prison of N.J. 1885-1911; origin and development of the state home for boys at Jamesburg, and state home for girls at Trenton; documents relating to the colonial period; origin and development of the state reformatory at Rahway; etc. 654 pgs. Illustrated, including 15 plates; 9 diagrams of buildings and grounds, some are fold-out formats. Prior owner's name stamps strikethrough on endpaper and outer edge; a few pages have small closed edge tears, including two of the fold-out plates' bottom edge- minor flaw. Front and rear hinge cracks repaired. Gilt spine slightly faded from age. Corners slightly rubbed and bumped. Scarce. . First Edition. Original Cloth. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
