About This Item

8vo, original decorated dark green cloth, gilt lettering on spine, Illustrated, 147 pp. Spine leaning, some rubbing and darkening to cloth, light wear, normal aging and foxing; otherwise very good. Edward Austin Johnson (1860-1944) started out in life as a slave on a large plantation. He began his education with a free black woman named Nancy Walton, and in 1879 he entered Atlanta University. He would continue his education at Shaw University Law School, and would eventually become a politician. After moving north, he would become the first African American elected to the New York legislature. He was also the author of "School History of the Negro in America. This title describes the role and courage of the Negro soldiers, known as Buffalo Troopers, in the Spanish-American War. Included are congratulatory messages from Theodore Roosevelt and President McKinley. There is even a racist titled poem, "The Charge of the Nigger Ninth on San Juan Hill." by George Powell that describes the courage and determination of the unit. The final chapter discusses problems facing African Americans in the United States, including the failure of government to protect them. Johnson goes on to say that the South could be a good place for Blacks if they can be protected. University of North Carolina website, Not in Work.
