London: Robert Tyas, 1840. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Raffet and Horace Vernet. Quartos. xii, 379; x, 510, 28 pages. Hardcovers bound in original 3/4 calf with blue and burgundy marbled paper-covered boards and with all edges marbled. Gilt tooling to the spines, which have dual red and black leather lettering pieces. The bindings are rubbed and bumped but sound. Hinges secure. The marbled paper on the covers are especially rubbed. Marbled endpapers. Foxing to the front and back of each volume, including the title pages. The text itself is a bit toned but is generally clean. Volume I is dated 1840; Volume II is dated 1841. Volume II has an Appendix with a separate title page (1841)reading, "The Second Funeral of Napoleon Bonaparte: Including an Account of the Exhumation of his Remains at St. Helena; and their Conveyance in the Belle Poule to France." Each volume contains a number of woodcut engravings (full-page and text illustrations).

Includes a 30-page publisher's catalog (erratically paginated) at the rear. Hardcover bound in full leather. The binding shows some old wear and cover stains but is quite sound. Sturdy hinges. Early owner's light pencil inscription on the front flyleaf and a later doctor's inscription on the front pastedown. The text block is sound, and the text is foxed, sometimes quite heavily. Still, a sturdy copy of a scarce work and in the original binding. From a Mocksville (Davie County), North Carolina 19th century doctor's collection.

The binding is quite rubbed and worn. The front board has damping. Rear board has smudges and scuffs. Some pages are damped have smudging. Text is foxed. No copyright date, but the book was published in 1903. An early owner's inscription on front flyleaf reads, "To Thomas (?) from Katherine Kelby. / Feb. 19, 1905." We have found a listing of this book for sale in the December, 1903 advertisements of "The Theosophical Forum." The advertisement in that journal of this book states, "The dawn of a new day in the intellectual and spiritual development of the child. Hardcovers bound in dark green half leather with marbled paper-covered boards. The bindings show some wear but are quite sound with sturdy hinges. The rear hinge on Volume 1 is scuffed with the untreated leather exposed. There is a white scuff mark on the front cover of Volume 1 at the bottom left corner. Bindings tight. Marbled endpapers. The text is a little toned and has some occasional foxing, but overall the text appears clean. Half title to Volume 1 appears to be a little loose. SIGNED Bechet (one of the publishers) on the verso of the title page to authenticate this edition as not being a pirated edition. Text is in French. A translation of the title into English is, "The Colonies and the Present Revolution of America.

The two leaves for pages 63-66 have large creases at the top right, affecting the text. Signed by an officer on the front cover. Signed "A. F. Kingman" who is listed in the rear of the book as 2nd Lt / 1st Lt. Capt. Early markings (presumably by Kingman), have pencil notations in the list of names, some marginal notes reading "KIA" for those killed in action. Scarce.

Marbled end-papers. Each frontispiece and the title page of Vol. II are cropped with no loss. Two ownership inscriptions on the front end-paper of each volume. A little foxing mainly to early and late pages. Vol. I pp.x,ii,379. Vol.II pp.x,510 + "The Second Funeral of Napoleon Bonaparte" ---(28pp) and "Facsimiles of Napoleon's Various Signatures" (12pp). No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.

Ikebana Arranging Images; Kamata, Soseke, 1950's. A nice publication given to Julia Jane Jeffers Dodge while here husband was helping Japan recover after the war. Her husband Joseph Morrell Dodge had a long and distinguished career and tried to help reform Europe but later wound up as financial advisor to Douglas MacArthur in the economic revitalization of Japan. This edition is in very good condition internally. Photos of Ikebana arrangements by the famous Japan Ikebana master. A gift given to Julia Jeffers Dodge and placed in her library. 38 single sided (double page but other side blank) on high quality Japan paper with photo examples of Ikebana, black and white. A rare publication.
