About This Item

London: Methuen & Co., 1901. Very Good +. In this book the author deals with the subject of Jesuits only so far as they belong to English history - from 1580 to1773 - and has little to do with their purely domestic affairs, and only touches upon them as far as it may be necessary to to understand the formation and ideals of men who set out to accomplish a definite work. The scope of this work attempts to discover the endthey aimed at and the means they employed to advance it. The subject of English Jesuits demands study. It is necessary for a full understanding of certain episodes in English history; and the bearing on the general subject of what may at first seem to be despicable ecclesiastical squabbles - that is to say, the struggles between the Jesuits and the Clergy - is seen to be profoundly important when the principle beneath the dispute is laid bare. The Jesuits, as a body, stood for the Catholic Reaction, from first to last, a political expedient. The Clergy, on the other hand, contented themselves with the cause of religion. green boards with writing to spine, marked and faded and some bumping.handcut pages that are foxed on the edges.binding loose.bookplate inside front cover.first two pages are loose.12 illustrations.
