About This Item

Cambridge, England: Cambridge at the University Press. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Complete in six volumes, and thus exceedingly scarce in this state and condition, there being only a single additional copy available on-line (and going for $1,200.00). From the personal library of the noted English historian of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, Professor Peter Morris Green, now of Iowa City, Iowa, 99 years old, nearly blind, but still working, in this case on a new translation and with annotations, of Herodotus, his favorite historian. Bound in burgundy cloth over boards, some discoloration and splotchiness to some panels and edges, light smudging to some foretip bottoms, a few ink-stamps from the previous owner here and there, but overall quite handsome, standing easily on the shelf, with sharp gilt-lettered titling over four blue cloth and two black cloth labels at spine. Else with few signs or use or soiling. Volume I: The Earlier Presocratics and the Pythagoreans (1962, xv 1-538 [1] pp.); Volume II: The Presocratic Tradition from Parmenides to Democritus (1965, xvii [1-553 pp.); Volume III: The Fifth-Century Enlightenment (1969, xvi [1], 3-543); Volume IV: Plato, The Man and His Dialogues Earlier Period (1975, xviii, 1-603 pp.); Volume V: The Later Plato and the Academy (1978, xvi 1-539 pp.); Volume VI: Aristotle: An Encounter (1981, xvi, 2-456 pp.). The author, William Keith Chambers Guthrie (1 August 1906 – 17 May 1981), usually cited as W.K.C. Guthrie, was, according to his Wikipedia entry, "a Scottish classical scholar, best known for his History of Greek Philosophy, published in six volumes between 1962 and his death. He served as Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy at the University of Cambridge from 1952 to 1973 and as master of Downing College, Cambridge from 1957 to 1972." The back-story to the origins of his magnum opus i qsuite compelling and begin in 1956 when he "was approached by the Syndics of the Cambridge University Press to write a history of ancient philosophy" (Wikipedia). The volumes came out one by one, usually to great acclaim. His final volume was published in the year of his death, but the series was to him unfinished. Volumes contain scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
