About This Item

1873 1ed Grange Movement American Agriculture & Farming Railroad GRANGER

Organized shortly after the Civil War, the Granger Movement (or the Grange) was adopted to promote agriculture and economic wellness between farmers and rural families. In the early 1870s, railroad companies began overcharging on their shipping rates of coal and grain, causing many economic problems for farmers. The Granger movement pushed politicians to regulate shipping costs of railroads, and while the political pushback was initially great, the Granger movement is still active into the 21st-century.

James D McCabe's 'History of the Grange Movement' is one of the earliest histories on the subject, providing information on the railroad shipping rates, and offering a glimpse into the difficulties endured by American farmers in the 19th-century.
