Charles Hindley (d.1893) who wrote many books on British popular literature and culture, in this work analyses the distinctive cries, characters and stories of the street traders of London, from mid-14th century to the Victorian era. The work is illustrated by nearly two hundred woodcuts, some taken from various editions of the original 'Cries', many by the London artists-engravers Thomas and John Bewick.
