About This Item

Melbourne, Parkville: Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AIMM), 1993. Hardback large quarto, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), dark green leatherette covers, many black & white text-photos, few colour photos (frontispiece & rear), figures, few black & white drawings, minor edgewear jacket (little rubbed), faint foxing top edge. Heavy, and extra postage may be requested to destinations outside Australia. 251 pp. This volume is a project of the Illawarra Branch of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AIMM). Coal mining in Australia followed settlement in 1788, as fortuitously Sydney was at the centre of the Sydney Coal Basin. The illustrations are from all important areas, depicting historical, technological, industrial and social conditions and events sourced from all corners of Australia. Con Martin was born in Ballarat, and spent his life in the mining industry, and he visited overseas a number of times, spreading his reputation worldwide and earning him the Institute Medal and the Order of Australia. This book is his final job. Con died without seeing the fruits of this work which bears his name. (No 21 in this AIMM Monograph series.).
