Boston: M.F. Quinn & Co.... under the auspices of Manager Frank G. Selee and Captain Hugh Duffy, for the Benefit of the Players, 1897. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Small quarto. 241pp., ads. Profusely illustrated with photographs of all the early Boston teams, and of the players of the 1897 team. Cloth worn through at the extremities, front hinge neatly restored, modest evidence of previous repair, light wear at the edges of a few leaves, a good or better copy. An exceptionally scarce team history, and the first history of any team to be issued between hardcovers. The binding was largely inadequate for the job, and consequently copies in any condition are rare. Despite some flaws this is a better than usual copy.

Boston: M. F. Quinn & Co., 1897 First edition. Original red cloth, with front board lettered in gilt, and advertisements to endpapers. Overall, a handsome copy. This 19th century baseball book surveys the history of baseball and, more specifically, the history of the Boston Base Ball Club, from its inception in 1871 to 1897. The book also features profiles of players on the roster at the time of publication, and earlier greats, like Mike "King" Kelly and A. G. Spalding. In 1869, the first all-professional baseball team, The Cincinnati Red Stockings, was assembled, but they were disbanded just one year later.
