About This Item
Hartford: Julius Gilman, 1827. First edition. Full Calf. Very Good. 178 pp, each measuring 2 by 1.5 inches, 52 by 40 mm, with 11 woodcut plates. With bookplate of Cornelius J. Hauck Collection, thus providing a distinguished provenance. This collection was formed between 1945 and 1965 to document the history of the book. The private collection was put together under the guidance of the highly regarded bookseller Emil Offenbacher. The collection was given to the Cincinnati Historical Society, which became the Cincinnati Museum Center, and it was deaccessed in 2006 by auction at Christie's (where it sold for $960). Hauck's family fortune was made in brewing and then investments, and the Haucks are among the most prominent of Cincinnati families. Some wear to the binding, but overall it remains uncommonly bright and well-preserved. Minor soilage of leaves, which also overall clean. A tight and handsome copy.
