Clarke County was created from Jackson County in 1801, and Jackson County had been cut off from Franklin County in 1796. This whole area is a pivotal point of migration into, as settlers were moving westward from South Carolina and was a springboard into areas further west. This book discusses the development of the city of Athens as well as the county of Clarke through discussions of religious, educational, political, and economic affairs that occurred during this time. The researcher will be delighted to find over 145 biographical sketches located throughout the book. These sketches of these early settlers had a wide variety professions ranging from: clergymen, teachers, doctors, politicians, businessmen and etc..
