1634 Walter Raleigh History of the World Rome Egypt Trojan Punic War MAPS
"The designs and style of Raleigh's 'History of the World' places the book among the noblest of literary enterprises" – DNB
Sir Walter Raleigh, a 16th-century English explorer and writer, is most known for his South American voyage in hopes of discovering the 'City of Gold'. While imprisoned for treason, he composed his famous book 'History of the World' – a historical view of the world with a heavy emphasis on geography. Even though the work was written as a history book, Raleigh intended to provide advice to King James I of England on how to handle his reign and his feelings toward princes.
This work covers five distinct sections, each of which is charmingly illustrated with city views, maps, and plans.
·
Creation of the world through life of Abraham
·
Abraham through the destruction of Solomon's Temple
·
Fall of Jerusalem to Philip of Macedonia
·
Reign of Philip to rise of Antigonus
·
Rule of Alexander the Great through Roman conquests
This 1634 edition includes an undated title page with Raleigh's portrait along with impressive double-page maps and genealogical tables.
