1596 RARE 1st English ed Philippe Commines Kings Louis XI France Charles VIII
Philippe de Commines was a 15th-century Burgundian diplomat whose 'Memoires' helped him become the first critical and philosophical historian of modern literature. This collection of essays and entries reveal many of the faults and scandals of the reign of Louis XI. Even though Commines supported the king, the content of the 'Memoirs' portrays Louis XI negatively. Commines and this work are considered one of the primary sources of 15th-century European history. In addition to the court of Louis XI, Commines discusses Italian wars during the reign of Charles VIII of France.
This 1596 English edition, while it features a different title, is a fine translation of Commynes' 'Memoires' edited by Thomas Danett, and features genealogical tables at the end of the work.

Pherotee La Croix's "Universal Relation of Africa" is a famous 17th-century history of Africa. La Croix was a professor of geography in Lyon whose work on Africa became a lasting authority of African geography and history. However, much of La Croix's "Afrique" was heavily inspired by Dutch author Olfert Dapper's "Description of Africa".
Even still, La Croix's work is notable for the exquisite full-page and folding engravings as well as descriptions of some of the greatest mysteries of Africa including a section on Egyptian pyramids, the Sphinx, and mummies! Petrarch was a 14th-century Italian humanist known for his discovery of the letters of Cicero and establishment of the study of humanism. He wrote sonnets and poems, many of which were the model of poetry during the Dark Ages. This exceedingly rare 1547 edition of the works of Petrarch includes his 'Triumphs' with commentary and notes by Alessandro Vellutello, a 16th-century Venetian author who was perhaps best-known for his commentary on Petrarch which first appeared in 1525.

Johann Pistorius was a 16th-century historian who published a number of anti-Protestant works each of which demonstrated his knowledge of his despised theological opponents such as Martin Luther. One of his rather unknown works was his collection of the works of medieval chroniclers including the works of Marianus Scotus, Sigebertus of Gembloux, Lambert of Hersfeld, Roberti de Monte (Torigni), and Hermannus Contractus of Reichenau all of whom were known to chronicle the history of Germany and Germanic tribes.

George Anson was an 18th-century British Navy admiral who is noted for his important world voyage in which he circumnavigated the globe. This voyage, beginning in 1740, was initiated in order to disrupt Spain and their acquisitions from the Pacific – even though the squadron saw certain danger.
"Anson's voyage is remembered as a classic tale of endurance and leadership in the face of fearful disasters" (Rodger, 239)
He saw substantial victory by capturing Spanish ships carrying pieces of eight, silver, and other treasure; thus, allowing Anson to return home a very rich sailor. This voyage took Anson and company into South America and home by way of China – a true world voyage!

Newly rebound in hardcover charcoal linen with a maroon leather spine label. New endpapers added with original endpapers retained. Illustrated title page and numerous woodcut initials in-text. Early marginalia on the title page, preface, and final endpaper, including the name Leo Agbirowz. The page edges are slightly trimmed, and there is minor to moderate soiling and staining scattered here and there. This is the third edition in English, the first being in 1596. Philippe de Comines (1447-1511) was a French diplomat in the courts of Kings Louis XI and Charles VIII. His work is famed as a realistic view of the Machiavellian intrigue at the French court. The latter section of the work is an important contemporary account of the Italian Wars of the late 15th century which ended with Charles VIII's death in 1498.

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
