Popes-head Pallace, at the signe of the White Horse: George Humble, 1632 A very good copy of the 3rd edition, 'revised, enlarged, and newly corrected, with sundry descents of the Saxons Kings, Their Marriages and Armes.'This work continued Speed's 'Theatre of Great Britaine' - and the contents listing refers to the first 4 books which were part of the Theatre, although this work (books 5 - 10) is complete in itself. With frontispiece of John Speed by S Savery (frequently absent) numerous woodcut illustrations and tables, and head and tailpiece decorations. In contemporary full leather binding which has been rebacked and repaired to preserve the spine and boards. The spine has raised bands and gilt panels, and a title label; the boards are plain with ruled lines to edges. There is some scuffing and wear but the binding is in very good sound condition. Internally there is a heraldic bookplate to the front pastedown which looks to date from when the book was repaired. The endpapers also date from that time. Contents: frontispiece; title page; dedication 1p; contents 5pp; citations 4pp; Proeme 7pp; text 1-1042; catalogue 1043-1086 - with pagination on recto only; text 1087-1237; summary conclusion 4pp; index 80pp; finis; blank; endpapers. The frontispiece has a repaired tear and a little loss to the side margin; title page some repair at the corner; numerous pagination errors eg p379/80 is bound after 381/2, 102-followed by 113 but text continuous; occasional small corner or margin loss with no loss of text; occasional light stains or marks - the only point at which there is any obscuration of text is on p925 where 2 words are affected. Overall a very clean copy with good quality paper.

Description:
LONDON: Tho Roycroft for Richard Blome, 1673 A fair copy of the 1st edition sadly lacking all but 2 of the maps. This work is rare. Richard Blome was heavily criticised at the time for producing the work - being accused of plagiarising Camden and Speed. He funded the work through subscribers but clearly sold few copies and ownership of it passed to John Wright in 1677. His work is now being reassessed and he is recognised for being the first to properly plan an illustrated description of London. This copy is in contemporary full leather binding which has been rebacked reasonably recently to provide a new spine with raised bands and gilt outlined title label. The boards have wear as you would expect - particularly to the corners - but are sound. With title page in red and black inks, dedication to Charles II, Preface to the Reader, alphabetical table of subscribers ('benefactors'), 12 leaves of coats of arms of the benefactors, portrait of Charles II pasted at the beginning of a general… Read More

Description:
London: Alexander Hogg, 1790 A good copy in recent quarter leather binding, with frontispiece, folding map of England and Wales, maps of Scotland and Ireland, and 103 further full page plates. Like many attempts to cover 'earliest history' to 'the present day', this is somewhat sketchy on the early sections, but increasingly detailed almost to a diary approach on 'the present day'. This is a later edition - undated - but the last entry is for June 10th 1790. The author simply added pages to update so although the text pagination runs to p714, the index section starts at p709 reflecting the smaller initial version. Known particularly for its lavish engravings - especially the later ones covering the American War of Independence. This copy has been recently rebound: the binding has a leather spine and title label and marbled boards and is in very good condition. New endpapers. With title page; dedication 1p; folding map of Dorsetshire; text with decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals 128pp; Names of Persons/plate listing 4pp; 6 plates of Arms; Index 16pp; blank. The contents are very clean and in good order with just the occasional mark. The map has a crease from poor folding but is complete and clean. The endpapers have some marking and the front endpaper has not been repaired along the joint when the new spine was added.

London: John Dawson for George Humble, 1632 . Leather. Very Good. 14.5" by 9.5". Not Stated. The very scarce enlarged third edition of this monumental history of Britain by the influential historian and cartographer, John Speed. ESTC Citation No. S997First published in 1611, this is the work of leading English cartographer and historian John Speed, considered one of the best known English mapmakers of the early modern period.  Following encouragement from English antiquarian and historian William Camden, Speed began this work, utilising the work of cartographers Christopher Saxton and John Norden. The work offers a highly detailed summary of Early English history, and whilst it has been criticised for a number of inaccuracies, the subsequent frequent citations of the work in later historical pieces reflect its historical significance. Among others, the work offers detailed information regarding the early successors and founders of English institutions including The Saxons, Henry VIII and Edward… Read More
