About This Item
Anson D. F. Randolph & Co., 1887. Hardcover. Near Fine. Three Vols. Stanley was the Dean of Westminster and this beautiful Limited Edition , the first to be published in America , was from the Sixth London Edition , which included Stanley's final revisions made shortly before his death. This set is # 544 of 600 published by Randolph. Each vol. is signed by Randolph. These vols. are rebound in three-quarter leather. Both the bindings and the interiors are in excellent condition. The entire work is dedicated by Stanley to Queen Victoria. Vol. One : The Foundation Of The Abbey , The Coronations , The Royal Tombs. Twelve plates beautifully printed here by Randolph. Includes a very helpful and detailed Chronological Table of Events Connected With Westminster Abbey. Also includes a chart giving General Dimensions Of The Abbey Church. Photograph of the Abbey has been tucked in on second free endpaper and has left foxing there. Name of previous owner written discretely on third free endpaper. No other marks. Vol. Two : The Monuments. Fourteen Plates including Poet's Corner and Chaucer. No marks. Vol. Three : Before And Since The Reformation. Fourteen Plates. Includes an AccountOf The Search For The Burialplace Of James I . No Marks. Stanley knew his material and , of course , he had access to all extant documents and records. Overall, his accounts , descriptions , and analysis in these three volumes is excellent. By the way , he is quite frank about events and does avoid the more unhappy parts of the story. Overall , a spectacular set.
