London: Trustees of the British Museum, 1962. First Edition Pictorial Wraps AS NEW in WRAPS Small 4to (6-1/4 x 9-3/4), 48 pp. 1962 First Edition FINE -- unmarked, apparently unread, and AS NEW with tipped-in color plate of the temporary Elgin Room in 1819. Card-stock pictorial wraps are FINE (minor bumps on corners, otherwise AS NEW). (h) These are the Elgin marbles taken from the Parthenon and sent to England in 1801. At that time, they were viewed as vandalism and theft, until Parliament held that it was not, and the British government purchased the pieces from Lord Elgin. While all the scuptures are part of Lord Elgin's plunder, the term is generally limited to the bas reliefs removed from the building structure, including more than half the original 524 feet of the horizontal "Parthenon Frieze." The British Museum has answered Greece's claim by saying they won't return statuary else every country in the world would be able to demand return of pieces taken from them. At issue are the bas relief pieces that were actually part of the Parthenon's architecture and therefore not the same thing as free-standing statuary. The dispute continues.
