About This Item

Chicago: Munsell Publishing Company, 1904. Three Quarter Leather. Very Good. Photographs & Maps. Bound in ribbed charcoal cloth with corners and backstrip in brown leather. Spine in five compartments, with titles and decorations stamped in gilt. Title page dated 1904, but three earlier copyrights indicate this volume was likely published in two volumes at an earlier date, with the Illinois history separate from that of Jo Daviess County. They are here combined in one volume, with 705 total pages; the county history begins at page 617. The endpapers are marbled in green and gilt, with all edges also in gilt. Frontispiece of Lincoln is present with the tissue guard intact. Profusely illustrated throughout, with scenes from Illinois history and photographs of individuals, with most of the latter in the county section. The leather shows only very light rubbing at the extremities, with all corners slightly rubbed but not frayed; the leather has no splits or tears. The cloth has a small bump at the front cover fore-edge. The colored map of Illinois has a small number 306 penned to it, and the front pastedown carries a tasteful bookplate; otherwise the volume is unmarked. Hinges solid; binding square. A clean, tight copy. An important county study, with its extensive lead mining history and the Grant residence in Galena. Uncommon. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
